Where to go from here

Congratulations! Now that you have learned some of the basics about pathology informatics, where do you go from here?

If you were not able to get involved in a research project or clinical activity in pathology informatics at your local hospital, you may want to consider doing an away rotation as an elective at one of the programs listed below, and get some practical or research-related experience in the field. For some of the away rotations, there are grants for travel expenses that you can apply for.

If you were able to get involved in a project while taking this course, you should definitely consider submitting an abstract to one of the annual pathology informatics conferences. The APIII is a good one to start with, as it hosts both academic and industry-related speakers, and has dedicated sessions for presenting abstracts.

If you have decided that you would be interested in pursuing a fellowship program in pathology informatics, there are a number of fellowship programs around the country that you can apply to. It is good to think about your application more than a year in advance of when you anticipate starting in a program, as many fellowship programs have deadlines for applications about a year in advance of the start date.
